Cheek Augmentation

Cheek augmentation refers to a range of plastic surgery techniques designed to help aging patients restore the youthful balance and harmony of their facial features. Additionally, cheek augmentation procedures can also improve the aesthetic appearance of younger patients with naturally narrow or asymmetrical facial structures, or those that have experienced trauma in the mid-facial zones.

TREATMENTS:

Cheek implants

Cheek implants increase the projection of the cheekbones. They add volume to areas that may be recessed or flat.

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers help to diminish facial lines and restore volume and fullness in the face. As we age, our faces naturally lose subcutaneous fat. The facial muscles are then working closer to the skin surface, so smile lines and crow’s feet become more apparent. The facial skin also stretches a bit, adding to this loss of facial volume. Other factors that affect the facial skin include sun exposure, heredity and lifestyle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A cheek augmentation refers to refinement/improvement of the bone contour of the cheek area. This is usually accomplished by placement of a fitted "implant" directly on the bone of the cheek, well below the skin.

Your surgeon will ask you about what you hope to achieve with cheek augmentation, and then he or she will give a professional opinion of what can be achieved realistically taking into account many variables, including your facial dimensions and shape.

Cheek implants are most often placed through incisions in the mouth.

Implants are the ideal solution for men and women seeking long-term results with minimal downtime. Medical-grade facial implants provide more volume and a 3D structure that fillers simply can't. For patients who have severely sunken cheeks, dermal fillers may not be enough to give you the outcome you're looking for.

In the 2 weeks prior to the procedure, you’ll need to avoid taking any blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin.

If you’re on prescription blood thinners, let your provider know at your consultation meeting. They may give you additional guidelines for how to prep for your filler appointment.

The results of solid cheek implants are permanent.

Well-placed, custom-made cheek implants can make a person look more youthful. These implants can also sculpt your facial structure so that certain features are more prominent and distinct, which helps to create an attractive profile that will enhance your overall appearance.

There are three main types of cheek augmentation: implants, fat transfer and dermal fillers. There are malar implants placed directly on the cheekbones for higher projection, submalar implants for fuller appearance or a combination of both implants.

A cheek augmentation can correct:

  • Flat or low lying cheek bones
  • Sagging tissue in the mid face
  • Reduced facial volume

Patients are advised to sleep with the head of bed elevated or in a recliner for 2-4 weeks post-op.  This helps to minimize swelling.

Following cheek augmentation with a medical grade implant, the cheek areas are swollen initially and some bruising may occur, but the swelling subsides in a few weeks. Most patients may return to work or resume “normal” activities within a few days after surgery.
